Making Natural SageBrush Parchment Business Cards

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

This business card design includes using a favorite of mine in the Fine Parchment line. Parchment paper was made many years ago out of animal skins such as sheep and goat. It can be drawn on, painted on or printed on. It can also be imitated with high quality CMYK printing standards. All natural designs shown are imitated in CMYK. We start with a high resolution scan of the paper material itself and then create a natural looking, complimentarty typography style.

In the end we can produce a very good, simulated look at a fraction of the price. Our business card templates are available for download in vector format or printing starting at $49/ 500.

Converting RGB Color for Commercial Printing (CMYK)

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

As a CMYK printing company we are always trying to find methods to help with common problems or misunderstandings. One of the most significant areas of digital print that is misunderstood and perhaps even misrepresented is RGB and CMYK. With the use of Desktop programs such as Illustrator, Corel Draw, Quark and Photo Shop many great designs come to us in RGB format for printing. Some design technicians do not seem to be aware of the differences. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to scare you, rather prepare you for the process of converting from RGB to CMYK.

In most cases there is little difference to the human eye. However the technical differences are enormous. Let me explain…

RGB Color Language

Is a color model that depends on the light emissions from a monitor, TV or projected slide show (to mention a few) to present imagery to the human eye. Every TV show you watch is presented to your eyes using Red Green and Blue color.

CMYK Color Language

Is a color model used by most commercial printers to print in color. When you look at color brochures, printed color photographs, annual reports, colorful posters, etc they are produced on a printing press using 4 primary colors of ink Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and BlacK. It is often confusing to clearly understand what the K in this acronym really means. Theories include:

Yet when I attended a seminar back in the eighties I understood it meant Kilo? One thing all theories seem to agree on is K=Black. I can verify as a retired 40″ full color printing press operator that The K is black ink on press. So why is this common full color printing acronym not called CMYB? For decades I have always wondered why? For absolute certain when I wash-up the press and make ready for my next CMYK printing job my press ink reservoirs looks like this:

CMYK inks

We know that RGB uses 3 channels and is achieved by light. We also know that CMYK uses the color of the white paper and light reflection from the visible white surface to bring the color of a printed image to the human eye.

The bottom line is when you create concepts on your computer to ultimately be printed in CMYK, RGB colors (on screen) seem to always be more vibrant then the finished CMYK product.

Having been in the print and litho business for 3 decades we have had the pleasure of dealing with some very creative design people. In the eighties RGB and CMYK were not a big issue because concepts and artwork were prepared photo mechanically. Scans of photos were expensive and were typically performed on a drum scanner. Today, there are drum scans, flatbed scans, scanning from slides or downloading digital plus many other possibilities.

I wanted to help those that struggle with bringing the accuracy of RGB to the printed surface in CMYK. I have prepared this tutorial to help you attain the best results possible from RGB to CMYK using Adobe Photo Shop.

  1. CMYK and RGB Identical Images side by side
  2. Color correcting using presets in Adobe Photoshop
  3. First preset view>proof set-up>custom

  35. The sliders for Hue, Saturation or brightness.
  36. Corrected and close to the RGB model now
  37. More we can do?
  38. Using levels
  39. Use the Levels sliders and experiment
  40. Levels and Curves to are powerful
  41. Tonal Curves
  42. Curves- apply major changes to any photo
  43. Very slight tonal curves

At the bottom of each page are colors that are translated in 3 languages HTML, RGB and CMYK. If you want to know what the estimated Pantone® number is check as many as you like and we will email you a close (if not exact) color swatch.
In this presentation you will also notice that each page has an entirely different color theme. Although it does not relate directly to CMYK and RGB it is to show the importance of colors. Please keep this in mind when viewing this tutorial. You will see how each page communicates a different color scheme that affects how you feel. This is done to clearly illustrate the importance of keeping colors as originally intended by a designer…colors speak volumes in their own language!!

Natural Straw Photo Image Design

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Collectors can look at this printed piece as vintage and torn looking. It is a concept intentionally designed to appear that way. Getting your artwork printed this way can be expensive. Making a design like this helps us to understand history in the way of styles and fashions. Dirty looking ripped. Faded parchment and torn creates a certain feel to your concept and can be extremely eye catchy. Take your printing concept back in time to the 5th century where parchment paper was originally formed from calf, sheep or goat skin.. It was hand made, stretched out, scribed and scraped and naturally dried in sunlight.

It is every marketeer’s goal to find that special little secret that multiples responses and actions from the target audience. If we think about the old fashioned approach to doing business there is a face and friendliness that we just don’t seem to practice in this high tech faceless world we live in. Grandma’s hands always had a warm personal touch that is needed sometimes today.

Parchment paper is warm, smooth, conveys thoughtfulness and is more likely to receive attention from your readers.

Sport Red Linen Inset Border Business Card Design

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Some images are very difficult to reproduce in color. Simply because part of the concept is feel. Printing techniques such as embossing, foil stamping, creasing and perforating have a feel to each printed piece. On this design we have applied an embossed panel effect, making it appear as though it insets. To have this card custom printed in this fashion would be very costly. However to have it mimicked in CMYK would cost less that $50 for 500, including customizing. You can customize this card yourself or take a look through the flickr collection of photo business card designs. Making paper and color choices for printing is a process best left to the professional designers. However, if you want an emailed list of your favorite colors instantly you can request a custom swatch book e-mailed to you.

Adding CMS to Backend Checkout

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

This summer has been great so far. I went on holidays for a couple weeks and neglected to tell any of my programmers. Most of my programming is outsourced. The people I am most comfortable dealing with are Russian and one of my favs…Sergey, thought I fell off the face of the planet. I left a few projects up in the air. It was great to speak with him today to discuss the improvements I am making to the back end of this website. Basically what we are doing is making the checkout process become a lot easier. Currently when you order business cards through our online design system the checkout options include the following:

Single Order Pricing 4/0, 4/1 or 4/4

500 Business Cards
1,000 Business Cards
2,000 Business Cards
5,000 Business Cards
10,000 Business Cards

Group Pricing 4/0, 4/1 or 4/4

500 X 2 names (1000)
500 X 4 names (2000)
500 X 6 names (3000)
1000 X 2 names (2000)
1000 X 4 names (4000)
1000 X 6 names (6000)

The problem is when our visitors get to this stage they are a little confused. It is up to them to find the right options based on what they have designed. So what we are doing is making a CMS for admin to administer pricing. Additionally, we are building in some clever scripting that will only display options to each visitor based on what they have created. You see our pricing works 2 ways:
1) Single Order Pricing: You can order 1 business card design in quanities of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000

2) Group Order Pricing- You can order 500 X 2 names (1000), 500 X 4 names (2000), 500 X 6 names (3000), 1000 X 2 names (2000), 1000 X 4 names (4000), 1000 X 6 names (6000). This is a great way to save money but you must stay within the rules of the group. The most common misunderstanding we have is people try to order 3 sets or 5 sets. In these case you need to add or remove one because you can only order in even increments, 2,4 or 6 sets. We are also creating alerts for users that attempt to do this. The bottom line is group pricing offers significant savings…at a four name purcase you can afford to throw one out and you will still save money.

Here’s what Sergey and I discussed today
Robert says:
Hi Guy
Sergey says:
Hi Robert!
Robert says:

Sergey says:
How are you ?
Sergey says:

Robert says:
Xcellent
Robert says:
and U?
Sergey says:
Perfect, thanks
Robert says:
gr8
Sergey says:
Maty I ask you a few questions ?
Robert says:
any luck figuring out a solution for AM?
Robert says:
sure
Sergey says:
A user could make unlimited number of postcards ? Right ?
Robert says:
no let’s cap it at 6
Robert says:
pricing supports 6
Sergey says:
Can they be one-sided ? I mean have only front side ? Or they *must* be 2-sided ? I mean have always both front and back side ?
Robert says:
yes
Sergey says:
I mean back side is an option or requirement ?
Robert says:
6 names can be perchased with any options
Robert says:
4/0, 4/4…group and singles
Sergey says:
OK. So they could be e.g 4 2-sided and 2 one-sided, right ?
Robert says:
I see what you are saying…
Sergey says:
as an example I mean
Robert says:
the answer is yes…
Robert says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/businesscardscolour.htm
Robert says:
May explain options better
Robert says:
although I have not considered this variation
Sergey says:
4/1 - is it 4 front sides with 1 back side ? Sorry for the silly question
Robert says:
now we need to reconsder what option are available on checkout?
Robert says:
Let me please explain the terms used in printing….
Sergey says:
Yes, thanks, it would be great
Robert says:
4/0= 4 color 1 side, no printing on back
Robert says:
4/1=4 color 1 side, i color on back
Robert says:
4/4= 4 color both sides
Sergey says:
i color on back ?

Robert says:
sorry 1 (one)
Sergey says:
You mean the back side is filled in with one color - nothing else there, right ?
Robert says:
yes, yhese are recognized terms in the printing industry
Robert says:
these
Sergey says:
And groups below is is when they order more than 1 card, right ?
Robert says:
yes
Sergey says:
6 at most, right ?
Robert says:
yes
Sergey says:
And they could not order different sets. I mean part 4/1 and part 4/4
Robert says:
yes, we can decide that now
Robert says:
good point
Sergey says:
thanks
Sergey says:
Why make groups at all ? If they order 6 cards in a sequance with any option - 4/0 or 4/1 or 4/4 the price could be calculated at the end ?
Sergey says:
I mean when they order up to 6
Robert says:
true!!
Robert says:
even better…
Robert says:
if I understand correctly
Sergey says:
yes ?
Sergey says:
Oh, I see
Robert says:
You mean…
Sergey says:
sorry
Robert says:
After a user designs
Robert says:
the system will automatically calculate it for them, based on what they have completed?
Sergey says:
Yes. though it would be good to tell them about any discounts on volume in advance …
Robert says:
right
Robert says:
indeed it would
Robert says:
Perhaps we should lokk at some kind of CMS for admin?
Robert says:
look
Sergey says:
Yes, it is possible … You mean where the admin would set the prices and corresponding volumes ?
Robert says:
to be able to set and change prices
Sergey says:
I see
Sergey says:
I have a question then …
Robert says:
Is this some you can build?
Robert says:
sure
Sergey says:
Yes, of course
Robert says:
gr8
Sergey says:
I can build anything which could be built in PHP/MySQL
Sergey says:
My question is:
Robert says:
yes, you have said that before and I have yet to make you stumble
Sergey says:
If they order e.g. a set of card 4/0 - big volume
Robert says:
yes
Sergey says:
Yes, of course, you could try me … So to the question:
Robert says:
lol
Robert says:
ok?
Sergey says:

Sergey says:
If they order e.g. a set of card 4/0 - big volume and then

Sergey says:
order one more set 4/1
Sergey says:
will the price for 4/1 less because of the big volume on the previous set ?
Robert says:
no
Robert says:
in order to take advantage of group pricing…
Robert says:
user must stay with 1 product group
Robert says:
within
Sergey says:
I see. So the sets of 6 possible cards are completely independent and general volume does not influense the final price ?
Robert says:
! sec
Sergey says:
Yes, of course
Robert says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/panelV2/V2_buscards_adv_complete.php
Robert says:
shows group options
Robert says:
with applicable pricing
Robert says:
so…
Robert says:
currenty the biggest volume order you can place is for 6,000 pcs.
Sergey says:
I see. The questions: 2 sets / 4 sets / 6 sets … What about 3 sets ?
Robert says:
found in “4/4 or 4/1 Business Cards Group Pricing”
Robert says:
In video…
Robert says:
I describe that I would like a java alert…
Sergey says:
I have downloaded it of course … But this part has not been too clear … Sorry … I am trying to catch the concept ….
Robert says:
warning users that group orders must be placed in even increments, e.g.
Robert says:
2,4,6 only
Sergey says:
2 sets means e.g. 2 cards 4/4 ? I mean it is actually 2 cards, right ? Not one cards with 2 sides ?
Robert says:
yes, 2 different cards, full color 2 sided
Sergey says:
thanks, I see
Sergey says:
So if they need 3 sets they have to make 2 orders, right ?
Robert says:
Are you oon this page now http://www.weprintcolor.com/panelV2/V2_buscards_adv_complete.php?
Sergey says:
One for single and one for 2
Sergey says:
yes, there
Robert says:
You can scroll down and click the little Question mark image for an explanation
Robert says:
of this
Robert says:
but it is probably better you ask
Robert says:
If they need 3…
Robert says:
They either have to remove one or add 1
Robert says:
same rule with 5
Sergey says:
I looked at the popup … Still if I need 3 different cards … Not 2 and not 4 … I am not allowed to order, right ?
Robert says:
They either have to remove one or add 1
Sergey says:
I see … Sorry for these questions, but if I do not understand something it is maybe I could design wrong … So I am trying to understand everything …
Robert says:
gr8
Robert says:
so far you get a gold star
Sergey says:
Thanks! so the admin panel should allow to set prices for the page:
Sergey says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/panelV2/V2_buscards_adv_complete.php
Sergey says:
right ?
Robert says:
that would be nice
Sergey says:
And these prices will be used in the calculation of the fianl price …
Sergey says:
fianl= final
Robert says:
as well as coordinating checkout better as described in vid
Robert says:
correct
Sergey says:
Ok. If the user makes 1st card, it is OK. then he makes the 2nd card. Everything is fine again. He designs the 3rd one … then proceeds to the order and there he find out that he should remove 1 card or add one more, right ?

Robert says:
god point …
Robert says:
we should “nip it at the bud”…
Robert says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/panelV2/V2_save_and_continue.php
Sergey says:
I am at the page
Robert says:
when user clicks options 2,3 or 4
Robert says:
we should ward them right there…
Robert says:
“You must order group orders in even increments, e.g. 2,4 or 6 different sets”
Robert says:
Maybe on first click
Sergey says:
We could warn them, it is not a problem … Still, if I am a clever user and I need 3 cards, I’ll just place 2 orders - 1st for 2 cards and 2nd for 1 card. It is a workaround, right ?
Robert says:
new window they click OK to close
Robert says:
well then you would pay more
Robert says:
When you group the cost savings in great….
Robert says:
you can order 4 sets and afford to throw one out
Sergey says:
Oh, I see, thanks. now I understand. Single order is more expensive. Now it is absolutely clear.
Robert says:
but you MUST make purchases within groups to take advantage of group pricing
Sergey says:
So, I think we should start with the admin panel because it will be used everywhere … If you agree with this … Or we could leave the pricing for the future now and I would work with the errors at back side design 1st
Sergey says:
What is more important now ?
Robert says:
sounds good, with 1 additional comment…
Sergey says:
yes ?
Robert says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/businesscardscolour.htm
Robert says:
same CMS
Robert says:
different prices
Robert says:
?
Robert says:
http://www.weprintcolor.com/reorder.htm
Robert says:
same CMS
Robert says:
Structurally all the same
Sergey says:
CMS = content management system. You mean not to change current calculation functionality or not to change the layout ?

Robert says:
price structure
Robert says:
what I am saying is these forms work on EXACTLY the same price structure…
Robert says:
just different prices
Sergey says:
Oh, I see, thanks
Robert says:
If you are going to make admin (CMS) for AM it would be ideal to also be able to update these if requiered
Sergey says:
Yes, of course. Which is more important now: pricing CMS or back side errors ?
Sergey says:
back side errors, I think, right ?
Robert says:
I think it is really a question of importance…
Robert says:
logic
Robert says:
CMS sounds like the first part to do?
Robert says:
what is your view?
Sergey says:
they are independent … Or I think so … I did not analyze the CMS yet, only back side design… Problems there are not dependant on pricing … I would start with abck side I think …
Sergey says:
abck = back
Robert says:
OK
Robert says:
I just thought…
Sergey says:
This is because the pricing calculation logically goes after the cards are designed …
Sergey says:
though they are interconnected of course
Sergey says:
If I understand everything correctly I mean …
Robert says:
with all rules I want in place CMS might better?
Sergey says:
Sorry, I have not understood the question …
Robert says:
rules=a more personalized checkout
Robert says:
as shown in vid
Robert says:
not really a question
Robert says:
a comment
Robert says:
?= what do you think?
Sergey says:
A CMS would allow you to change prices from time to time … Not for individual user because we do not have user registration system .. But for all users yes
Sergey says:
Calcualtion logic will stay the same
Robert says:
right, I see
Robert says:
cool
Sergey says:
OK. Thanks. So I am starting on back side design, then make CMS, right ? If you’d leke to change the order, please tell me.
Robert says:
sounds good to me
Sergey says:
thanks! It seems to be logical to design like this …
Sergey says:
Have a great day!
